Conexiones Divididas

Description
Exploring the merging of Mexican Ballet Folklorico and Contemporary U.S. Dance in Denton, Texas, this quartet deals with the struggle of being divided by two entities that make a person whole.
Inspiration For This Piece
As a Texas border native who crossed the bridge into the U.S. every day to attain my education, I took my own experiences as inspiration for this piece. I lived in a world of contradiction by being too American to live in Mexico and yet practicing U.S. techniques under Mexican educators. My cultures, my practice, and my own identities were separated. This separation of self is what inspired this piece.
Music
The composition for this piece was composed by Justin Friello.
Costumes
The leotards in this piece were chosen to represent the division of self in each of us. The color green represents the green in the resaca rivers in my hometown, Brownsville, Texas, and the orange represents the earth or the dirt around us. The pants were chosen to flow and flare in order to imitate the flaring of a Folklorico skirt.
